Chapter 4

From Data to Decision

The team analyzes initial test data, finding both validation and unexpected results. Lena refines the cable model to address minor vibration issues, while Dr. Jian Li scrutinizes the methodology and highlights scaling challenges. Aris prepares for an international press statement. Interest from Japan accelerates pressure, prompting the team to plan a bolder open-water demonstration. The chapter ends as Lena discovers an anomaly in the vibration data, hinting at a deeper engineering puzzle.

The Rotterdam test site lay quiet the next morning, but inside the makeshift control room, the atmosphere was electric. Stacks of printouts and glowing screens surrounded Lena Petrova as she hunched over the main terminal, scrolling through columns of numbers and graphs that traced every tremor of the hyper-lattice cable during yesterday’s storm. The cable had performed well—better than most had dared hope—yet the vibration pattern at peak load gnawed at her: a minor oscillation, quelled by dampers, but sharper than any simulation had predicted.

Dr. Aris Thorne entered with a flask of black coffee and a calm optimism that masked his own tension. “How do the numbers hold up?”

Lena didn’t look up. “It’s robust. But the resonance spike under wind load is peculiar—higher frequency, short duration. Nothing dangerous, but I want to know why.” She marked a section of the graph. “I’m rerunning the model with new boundary conditions.”
