The cobblestones of Oakhaven’s town square were slick with a dew that refused to burn off, even as the sun climbed higher in the bruised sky. It was a circular expanse, dominated by a gnarled oak tree at its center, its branches reaching like skeletal fingers towards the perpetually overcast heavens. Around it, a ring of stone buildings, their facades weathered and indifferent, seemed to watch their hesitant progress. The silence here was different from the hushed dread of the alleyways; it was a heavy, expectant silence, as if the very air held its breath.
Elara led the way, her eyes scanning every detail, from the chipped gargoyles perched on the eaves of the abandoned merchant’s shop to the peculiar, geometric patterns etched into the flagstones beneath their feet. Finn trailed a few paces behind, his arms crossed, his brow furrowed. “This is it, then? The grand finale? A patch of dirt with a grumpy-looking tree?” His voice, though quiet, carried a dismissive edge that grated on Elara’s nerves.
“It’s more than just dirt, Finn,” Maya murmured, her gaze fixed on the base of the oak. “Look at the stones. They’re not random. They form a pattern.” She knelt, tracing the faint lines with a gloved finger. “It’s… it’s almost like a map, or a constellation.”
