Chapter 5
The Locket's Hum
Finn's grandmother's locket begins to vibrate near an old town monument. Elara, drawn by an unknown force, touches the monument, experiencing a fleeting vision of a past tragedy.
The cobblestones of Oakhaven felt perpetually damp, even under the pale, diffused sunlight that dared to pierce the ancient canopy of trees. Each step echoed with a hollowness that seemed to absorb sound rather than reflect it, a constant reminder of their isolation. Finn, ever the pragmatist, kicked a loose stone, watching it skitter across the uneven surface and disappear into a shadowed crevice. “This place is like a giant, forgotten tomb,” he muttered, the sarcasm a thin shield against the creeping unease.
Elara, walking slightly ahead, didn’t turn. Her gaze was fixed on the weathered stone archway that dominated the small town square. It was less an entrance and more a stoic sentinel, carved with symbols that seemed to writhe at the edge of vision. “It feels older than that, Finn,” she said, her voice quiet but firm. “Older than anything I’ve ever known.”

They moved with a peculiar, almost synchronized slowness, their faces blank, their eyes holding a depth of weariness that chilled Maya to the bone. Liam, ever the steady presence, kept a reassuring hand on her shoulder, his own brow furrowed in concern. Leo, his small hand firmly clasped in Elara’s, shivered despite the mild air. “It’s too quiet, Elara,” he whispered, his voice barely audible. “Like everyone’s holding their breath.”
