The air in the old library clung to Maya like a shroud, thick with the scent of decaying paper and dust that had settled undisturbed for centuries. Sunlight, fractured by the grimy panes of the tall, arched windows, painted weak, golden streaks across the cluttered tables and towering shelves. Elara watched Maya from across the room, her gaze a mixture of concern and fascination. Maya looked paler than usual, her brow furrowed in intense concentration as she bent over a brittle, unbound manuscript. The parchment was a pale, sepia-toned skin, covered in a script that twisted and writhed like trapped serpents.

“Anything?” Elara’s voice was a soft murmur, careful not to disturb the fragile silence.

Maya didn’t look up immediately. Her fingers, stained with ink and grime, traced the alien characters with a reverence that bordered on obsession. She’d been at it for hours, the others having long since drifted off to explore other corners of the cavernous building, or perhaps just to escape the oppressive atmosphere. Finn, ever the pragmatist, had declared it a waste of time and gone to scout the perimeter of the town, muttering about structural integrity and escape routes. Jasper had disappeared with a glint in his eye, no doubt searching for loose floorboards or forgotten heirlooms. Leo, bless his small heart, was huddled in a corner with a tattered storybook, his imagination a shield against the encroaching dread.
