The jarring normalcy of the world outside Oakhaven was a physical blow. Sunlight, so long a filtered, hesitant guest in the shadowed lanes of the town, now blazed with an almost aggressive cheerfulness. The air, thick with the scent of pine and damp earth within Oakhaven’s oppressive embrace, was now crisp, carrying the mundane perfume of exhaust fumes and distant mown grass. Jasper, his usual calculating glint in his eyes dimmed, a strange, unreadable expression settling upon him. And Liam, his quiet strength a comforting anchor, his hand resting lightly on Maya’s shoulder. They were out. They had escaped. But Oakhaven had not entirely let them go.
