The air inside the old church was thick with the scent of dust and decay, a cloying perfume that clung to Jasper’s nostrils. Sunlight, fractured by the grimy stained-glass windows, cast an unsettling kaleidoscope of colours across the flagstone floor. He ran a hand over the rough-hewn wood of a pew, the grain a familiar texture beneath his fingertips, a small anchor in this sea of strangeness. Elara had been adamant they stay together, that venturing into the unknown alone was foolish, but foolhardy was a word Jasper wore like a well-loved coat. The others were occupied, Maya hunched over a crumbling tome in the nave, Liam and Finn arguing in hushed tones near the altar, and Leo, bless his innocent heart, sketching in a corner, his imaginary friend, Whisper, likely offering commentary only he could hear. This was his chance.

His gaze swept across the sanctuary, not with the reverence of a worshipper, but with the keen, assessing eye of a thief. He wasn't looking for salvation; he was looking for an exit, or failing that, a prize. The town, with its suffocating quiet and wary inhabitants, felt like a cage. And where there was a cage, there had to be a key, or at least a weak point. His eyes landed on the imposing stone pulpit, a monolithic structure that seemed to jut out from the wall with an unnatural prominence. It wasn’t just a place for sermons; it felt like a focal point, a central mechanism.

He approached it cautiously, his boots making little sound on the stone. He ran his fingers along the base, searching for seams, for any indication of a hidden compartment. The stone was cold, ancient, and unyielding. He circled it, his thoughts a rapid-fire calculation. This wasn't just stone; it was a puzzle. There had to be something more. He noticed a series of intricate carvings near the top, almost hidden by shadows. They depicted figures engaged in what looked like some sort of ritual, their hands outstretched, their faces contorted in expressions of both fear and supplication. He traced the lines, his mind sifting through the few lock-picking and trap-disarming techniques his old mentor, Silas, had drilled into him. Silas had always said, "Every lock has a key, Jasper. And every mechanism, no matter how complex, has a weakness. You just gotta find where it breathes."
