The cobblestones beneath their feet offered no comfort, only a relentless, uneven texture that seemed to mirror the disarray spiraling within the seven children. They were lost. Not in the way one might be lost on an unfamiliar trail, but lost in a way that felt more profound, more elemental. The towering, gabled houses leaned in, their darkened windows like vacant eyes, and the narrow streets twisted and turned with a deliberate, almost malicious, intent. Each alleyway appeared identical to the last, a suffocating labyrinth designed to disorient and trap. A thick, cloying silence pressed in on them, broken only by the frantic thumping of their own hearts and the rustle of unseen things in the shadowed eaves.
“This is hopeless,” Finn grumbled, kicking a loose stone that skittered away into the gloom. His usual sarcasm was laced with a genuine tremor of fear, a crack in the pragmatic facade he so carefully maintained. “We’ve been walking in circles for an hour. Elara, are you sure about this?”
Elara’s brow was furrowed, her gaze sweeping across the oppressive architecture. She was trying to hold onto reason, to logic, but the gnawing unease that had settled in her stomach since their arrival was growing, a cold dread that whispered of something far older and more sinister than mere disorientation. “I… I thought I recognized that gargoyle,” she admitted, her voice barely a whisper. “But it seems like everywhere we turn, it’s the same oppressive stone, the same shadowed corners.”
