The scent of ozone still clung faintly to the air, a phantom whisper of the emerald lightning that had crackled and surged mere days ago. Kai traced the rim of his mug, the ceramic warm against his fingertips, a grounding sensation in the quiet hum of their usual haunt – the corner booth at “The Daily Grind.” Sunlight, blessedly ordinary, streamed through the window, illuminating dust motes dancing in lazy spirals. It felt surreal, this return to the mundane, this fragile peace after the inferno.
JJ, ever the restless spirit, tapped a rhythm on the table with his spoon, his gaze fixed on the swirling patterns of his milkshake. The usual spark of adventure in his eyes was banked, replaced by a thoughtful simmer. “So, that’s it then? We just… go back to school?”
Anieldi, meticulously sharpening a small, almost invisible whetstone against his thumb, offered a low hum of assent. His movements were economical, precise, a stark contrast to JJ’s restless energy. “For now. The Eye of Aethel is contained. For now.”
