The city lights blurred into streaks of neon and gold as Kai leaned against the cool glass of the café window. Rain pattered a soft, insistent rhythm against the pane, mirroring the dull ache that had settled deep within his chest. It had been a good day, a truly good day. JJ had managed to talk Anieldi into trying that ridiculously spicy ramen, and the resulting explosion of green electricity from JJ’s fingertips, followed by Anieldi’s stoic, almost imperceptible shudder, had been classic. Even Ciaran, with his wide, eager eyes, had managed to coax a genuine, albeit fleeting, smile from Anieldi by presenting him with a perfectly carved ice sculpture of a snarling dragon. Kai’s own hands felt heavy, the Azure flames within him stirring restlessly, a beautiful, dangerous secret he carried.

“You’re quiet tonight, Kai,” JJ’s voice, warm and concerned, cut through Kai’s thoughts. He had moved to stand beside him, his presence a comforting weight. JJ’s eyes, usually alight with mischief, were filled with a gentle understanding.
