Chapter 6
Echoes of Laughter and Longing
Elara uncovers more diary entries, revealing the original pact-makers' hopeful intentions. She feels a strange kinship with them, their youthful dreams mirroring her own desires.
Elara traced the delicate floral pattern on the teacup, the same one that had coughed up the diary. It felt…warm. Not just from the lingering sunlight slanting through the dusty window, but a deep, humming warmth, like a purring cat curled up inside. She peered into its bone-white depths, half expecting another tiny, rolled-up scroll to pop out, perhaps a recipe for invisible cookies or instructions on how to teach a squirrel to juggle. He paused, one tiny paw hooked precariously, and chittered. It sounded suspiciously like, “Only if it involves more sunflower seeds.”
“Right. Well, the diary said there were more entries,” Elara mused, tapping a finger against her chin. “And that this pact was all about making Willow Creek… ‘extra special.’ What does that even mean, Reggie? Did they want the lampposts to sing show tunes? Or perhaps have spontaneous parades of dancing badgers?”
