Elara stood at the edge of Mrs. Gable’s prize-winning petunias, a strange new calm settling over her. It wasn’t the usual hum of her house, the one that felt like a thousand tiny teacups gossiping. This was different. This was… quiet. The sort of quiet that felt like a sigh of relief. Around her, the garden gnomes, those formerly hat-wearing, mischief-making little rascals, were back to their usual stoic poses. One, who had been sporting a rather fetching sombrero just yesterday, was now hatless, his painted-on smile looking a tad bewildered. The crooked croquet mallets that had been leaning against the oak tree like tipsy dancers were now standing perfectly straight, their stripes sharp and true.

Sir Reginald Fluffernutter, perched regally on Elara’s shoulder, twitched his nose. “Remarkable, wouldn’t you say, Elara?” he squeaked, his voice a tiny rustle of dried leaves. “The very air seems to be exhaling.”

Elara giggled, a light, airy sound that felt as new as the stillness. “It does, Reggie. It’s like the town just took a really, really deep breath and is finally letting it out.” She watched as a flock of sparrows, who had been seen earlier attempting to organize themselves into a synchronized aerial ballet, now simply flitted about, chirping their usual, everyday sparrow songs. Even the perpetually grumpy cat from down the lane, Bartholomew, who had been inexplicably wearing a tiny monocle, was now just Bartholomew, snoozing in a sunbeam, monocle-free.
