Sir Reginald Fluffernutter, a creature of profound fluff and even more profound loyalty, surveyed the scene from his perch atop Elara’s teacup collection. Below, the garden gnomes, their tiny hats now sporting miniature feathered plumes, were engaged in a spirited game of croquet, using oversized daisies as mallets. It was, Elara had declared with a sigh that ruffled her already-disorderly hair, getting a bit much. And Sir Reginald, whose own tiny hat collection was beginning to feel inadequate in comparison, wholeheartedly agreed.

“Right then, Reggie,” Elara whispered, her eyes, the color of a summer sky just before a storm, fixed on the animated garden ornaments. “It’s time for your big moment. The fate of Willow Creek, and more importantly, the fate of the sunflower seed supply, rests on your tiny, furry shoulders.”

Sir Reginald twitched his whiskers. He understood. He always understood. It was one of those peculiar side effects of living in Elara’s house, a house that seemed to absorb the echoes of every whispered secret and forgotten wish. He was, after all, Elara’s most trusted confidant, a furry, four-legged sounding board for her wildest theories. And his theory about the gnomes, while outlandish, was proving to be disturbingly accurate. They weren't just any gnomes; they were pact gnomes, animated by a centuries-old wish gone delightfully, or perhaps terrifyingly, awry.
