Episode 46

The crisp air, once alive with the scent of pine and damp earth, now carried the fainter, more acrid tang of woodsmoke and the distant bleating of sheep. Jedediah Smith stood on a rise overlooking the valley, his gaze sweeping across a landscape he barely recognized. The verdant expanse, once a wild tapestry of meadows and forests, was now crisscrossed with the ruts of wagon trails, smoothed by countless journeys. Jedediah knew that the days of the independent trapper, the lone adventurer charting his own destiny, were numbered. He heard whispers of larger companies consolidating their power, controlling the flow of pelts, dictating terms.
