The city lights bled into a smear of neon and desperation outside my grimy motel window. Each flicker, each distant siren, felt like a fresh pulse of dread. Sterling. The name itself was a cold knot in my gut. He wasn't just following; he was hunting, a predator with an unnerving precision that chilled me to the bone. My fingers still trembled as I replayed the last few hours, the frantic scramble, the near misses that had become my new normal.
The burner phone buzzed again, a jarring sound in the suffocating silence. It was Evelyn. Her messages were always terse, coded, a lifeline tossed into the churning sea of my paranoia. "Phase two initiated. They're accelerating. You're running out of time. Meet me. Usual precautions. Midnight. Old observatory."
The old observatory. A relic perched on the city's highest hill, abandoned years ago, a monument to a forgotten era of stargazing. Perfect. No one would expect me to go there. No one except Sterling, perhaps. He was too good, too thorough. My mind raced, dissecting the implications. Phase two. Accelerating. They were always accelerating, weren't they? Pushing the boundaries, blurring the lines, tightening their grip.
