Ms. Miller, her mother, stood beside him, a delicate porcelain figure, her hands clasped tightly in front of her, her gaze fixed on Mary with an unnerving intensity. It was a look that held a thousand unspoken questions, a desperate plea for normalcy, and a flicker of something else – a recognition, perhaps, of the girl who had always been more than she appeared.
