Yet, despite the comforting weight of knowledge, a chill had settled over him, a residue of Professor Rossi’s cutting remarks, of the dismissive nods from his colleagues. Their pronouncements, sharp as shards of obsidian, had left him feeling adrift, his ambitious quest for African agricultural wisdom seeming to shrink, to fade into the realm of fanciful conjecture.
It was in this hushed, sun-drenched space that Marco Bianchi found him, a familiar, grounding presence amidst the intellectual storm. Marco, with his earth-stained hands from tending his own small vineyard and a smile that could coax a bloom from the most stubborn soil, was Valerio’s anchor. He entered without preamble, a basket of sun-ripened figs balanced on his hip, their skin taut and bursting with sweetness.
“Still wrestling with ghosts, Valerio?” Marco’s voice was a low rumble, a comforting counterpoint to the silence. He set the basket on a cluttered table, the figs a vibrant splash of color against the faded parchment.
