The air in the abandoned warehouse tasted of dust and decay, a familiar perfume that clung to me like a shroud. It had been years since I’d breathed air like this, air thick with the metallic tang of desperation. But it was here, amidst the skeletal remains of industry, that the ghost of my past had chosen to manifest. The Broker. The name itself was a whisper of shadowed deals and broken promises.
He sat on an overturned crate, bathed in the weak, flickering beam of a single bare bulb, looking like a king on a broken throne. His voice, when it came, was a silken rasp, devoid of warmth. "Alex. Always so… punctual."
My eyes scanned the vast, empty space. No obvious traps, no obvious backup. That was The Broker’s style. Surgical. Precise. He liked to let the anticipation do the work. "You shouldn't have come here, Broker." My voice was steady, a careful construction I’d spent years perfecting. The Alex Mercer who juggled school runs and PTA meetings didn't exist in this echoing cavern.
