The chipped mug warmed my hands, a familiar weight against the tremor that had become an unwelcome companion. Sam watched me from across the kitchen island, his brow furrowed with a concern that was both a comfort and a torment. The morning sun, usually a cheerful intruder, felt too bright, too exposed. Everything felt too exposed. Maya’s laughter, a distant echo from her room, was the fragile shield I was fighting to maintain.
"You're barely touching your coffee, Alex," Sam said, his voice soft, laced with that gentle worry that always threatened to crack my carefully constructed facade. "And you’ve been staring at that same spot on the wall for ten minutes."
I forced a smile, a brittle thing that didn’t reach my eyes. "Just… thinking. Big project at work. You know how it is." The lie tasted like ash.
