The air in the small cafe, usually a comforting shroud of roasted beans and quiet clatter, felt thinner tonight, charged with an electricity I couldn't quite name. Silas sat across from me, his hands clasped around a mug that seemed far too warm for the mild evening. The steam rose in lazy tendrils, obscuring the sharp angles of his face, softening the perpetual shadow that seemed to cling to him. We’d spoken of ordinary things, of the weather, of a book I’d found gathering dust on my shelf, of the peculiar way the streetlights cast elongated, dancing figures on the pavement. But beneath the surface of these mundane exchanges, a deeper current pulled, a silent understanding that had been gathering strength with each stolen glance, each hushed conversation.

He tapped his chest, a gesture so subtle I might have missed it. "Like stones. Smooth, worn smooth by time, but heavy. So heavy sometimes, you forget what it feels like to walk without them."

I watched him, my own breath catching in my throat. I understood that weight. I lived with mine, a constant ache, a phantom limb of a joy that had been ripped away. It was the reason for the detachment, the melancholic gaze, the careful construction of my own placid existence. I had built walls so high, I sometimes wondered if I even remembered what lay on the other side.
