The rain had been a constant companion for days, a soft, insistent drumming against the windowpanes of my small apartment, mirroring the persistent ache within me. I’d grown accustomed to its presence, to the way it blurred the sharp edges of the world outside, making the familiar feel distant, almost dreamlike. It was during one such afternoon, the air thick with the scent of damp earth and forgotten things, that I saw him again. Silas.

He was standing across the street, beneath the awning of the old bookstore, his gaze fixed on something I couldn’t quite discern. A shiver, unrelated to the cold, traced its way down my spine. There was a stillness about him, a quietude that resonated with the hollow spaces inside me. I’d noticed him before, of course. Fleeting glimpses in the park, a shared moment of hesitation at the market, a brief, almost imperceptible nod of recognition. Each encounter left a faint imprint, a question mark hanging in the air between us.

Today, however, felt different. The rain seemed to have washed away more than just the dust from the streets; it had, perhaps, thinned the veils we so carefully wore. He looked up, and his eyes, the color of a stormy sea, met mine. There was no surprise, no forced smile, just a steady, unblinking gaze. It was as if he had been expecting me, as if he had seen me even when I believed myself to be hidden.
