The first light, a pale, watery wash against the inky canvas of night, found Khety already on his knees. The chill of the predawn air seeped through his linen kilt, a familiar sting that promised the coming heat. Around him, the vast plains of Giza stirred with a low, guttural rumble, the awakening of a city built not of brick and mortar, but of stone and sheer will. The air, thick with the damp earthiness of the Nile and the sharper, mineral tang of freshly quarried limestone, was a scent that had woven itself into Khety’s very being.
