The hushed reverence of the town library always had a way of settling Leo’s nerves, a stark contrast to the chaotic newsrooms he’d once navigated. Dust motes danced in the shafts of sunlight slanting through the tall, arched windows, illuminating rows upon rows of silent stories. He clutched the worn leather journal to his chest, a tangible link to a past he’d long tried to outrun. Eleanor Vance, his grandmother, a woman whose memory was a hazy tapestry of distant Christmases and polite, strained conversations. Now, her legacy was a house filled with the scent of mothballs and a cryptic journal promising… what? Adventure? Redemption? Or just another dead end for a man who’d specialized in them?
He found Ms. Albright perched on a stool behind the imposing oak circulation desk, her silver hair pulled into a neat bun, her spectacles glinting as she peered at a tome held open in her lap. The air around her seemed to hum with an ancient knowledge, as if she were as much a part of the library as the books themselves. Leo approached cautiously, the journal feeling heavier than it looked.
“Ms. Albright?” he began, his voice softer than he intended.
