A chill, not of the autumn air, snaked down Leo’s spine. It felt like a breath, cold and damp, brushing against his ear, carrying with it a whisper too faint to decipher, yet too distinct to ignore. He whipped his head around, his heart leaping into his throat, but there was nothing. Only the dense, unyielding wall of trees, their branches clawing at the bruised twilight sky. The feeling of being watched, a prickling sensation that had been a subtle hum all day, now swelled into a palpable, menacing presence. It was no longer a vague unease; it was a tangible weight pressing in on them, a predatory gaze fixed upon their small, frightened group.

Ethan, ever the observer, was already fidgeting, his eyes darting from shadow to shadow. "Did you hear that?" he whispered, his voice tight with a fear that mirrored Leo’s own.

Leo nodded, unable to find his voice. The woods, which had seemed a playground of adventure just hours ago, now felt like a suffocating trap. The familiar scent of pine and damp earth was tainted with something else, something ancient and unsettling.
