Footprints and Fear
They find Noah's distinctive boot prints leading deeper into the woods, but they abruptly stop near an ancient, gnarled oak. A sense of dread washes over them as they realize this is no ordinary disappearance.
The pre-dawn chill, sharp and biting, had already begun to seep into their sleeping bags, a cold reminder that the night, though mercifully quiet for a time, was far from over. Leo stirred, his eyelids heavy, a knot of unease tightening in his stomach. The silence that had settled after their frantic calls for Noah felt more menacing than any of the earlier rustles or snaps. It was a pregnant silence, heavy with unspoken dread. He fumbled for his flashlight, its beam a weak, trembling spear against the encroaching darkness. Beside him, Ethan was already awake, his breathing shallow and rapid, a silent testament to his perpetual worry.
"Anything?" Ethan whispered, his voice raspy.
Leo shook his head, the movement sending a jolt of cold air down his spine. "Nothing. Just… quiet." He hated that word. It felt like a lie. This wasn't the peaceful quiet of a sleeping forest; it was the coiled quiet of something holding its breath.
