The stillness of the pre-dawn air pressed in on them, thick and heavy like a damp blanket. Leo, Sam, Ethan, Caleb, and Hubert stood in a tight, trembling huddle around the dying embers of their campfire. The crackling had long since faded, replaced by the unnerving symphony of the woods – the whisper of unseen things, the snap of distant twigs, the low, mournful hoot of an owl that sounded less like a bird and more like a lament. Noah was gone.

The realization had hit them like a physical blow, stealing their breath and scattering their earlier bravado like leaves in a gale. One moment he was there, a sleepy lump tucked into his sleeping bag just beyond the flickering firelight, and the next… nothing. Just an empty space, a chilling void where their friend had been.

"Noah!" Leo’s voice, usually firm, cracked with a desperate urgency. He cupped his hands around his mouth, shouting into the impenetrable darkness that pressed in from all sides. "Noah, where are you?"
