Chapter 4
The Night the Silence Broke
Sleep offers little respite. Unexplained noises echo through the night – whispers, distant cries, and the unnerving sound of something heavy dragging. Leo wakes, feeling a primal fear.
Sleep, that sweet, elusive balm, offered little solace to the boys huddled in their sleeping bags. The crackling embers of the campfire, once a symbol of warmth and safety, now cast dancing shadows that seemed to writhe with a life of their own. The familiar scent of pine and damp earth, so comforting just hours before, now seemed thick with an unseen presence, a heavy blanket pressed down upon their chests.
Leo was the first to stir, his eyes snapping open in the inky blackness. A cold sweat slicked his skin, his heart hammering a frantic rhythm against his ribs. It wasn't a single sound that had woken him, but a symphony of unsettling noises, each one a delicate thread weaving a tapestry of unease. Whispers, like dry leaves skittering across stone, slithered through the trees. They were too indistinct to make out words, yet they carried an undeniable malevolence, a murmur of secrets best left undisturbed. Then, a distant cry, thin and reedy, like a lost animal’s lament, pierced the night. It was a sound that prickled the hairs on the back of Leo’s neck, a sound that spoke of profound sorrow and a desperate plea. But it was the third sound, the one that burrowed deepest into his gut, that truly sent a shiver down his spine: a heavy, rhythmic dragging, as if something immense and unwilling was being pulled across the forest floor.
He held his breath, straining his ears. The dragging sound seemed to be moving, slowly but surely, drawing nearer. It was punctuated by the snap of twigs and the rustle of undergrowth, sounds that were too deliberate to be the wind. A primal fear, raw and instinctual, washed over Leo. He was no longer the brave leader, the one who had scoffed at the local legends. He was just a fourteen-year-old boy, miles from home, surrounded by an darkness that felt ancient and hungry. He squeezed his eyes shut, trying to block out the terrifying symphony, but it was no use. The sounds seeped into his mind, painting vivid, horrifying images.
