The scent of pine needles and damp earth still clung to their clothes, even after multiple washes. Months had passed since the screaming, the frantic flight, the bone-chilling silence that had swallowed them whole in the woods. Leo tried to convince himself it was just a dream, a shared hallucination born of teenage overexcitement and too many campfire ghost stories. But the nightmares were too vivid, too real. School felt like a different planet. The mundane dramas of homework and locker combinations seemed laughably insignificant compared to the primal terror they had faced. Leo found himself staring out of classroom windows, his gaze drifting towards the distant, dark line of trees that marked the edge of town. Sam, his best friend, was the most outwardly put-together. He threw himself into soccer practice with a ferocity that bordered on obsession, his athletic prowess a shield against the memories. But Leo saw the flicker in his eyes sometimes, the way he’d flinch at a sudden loud noise, the way he’d scan the periphery of any open space as if expecting something to emerge from the shadows. They didn’t talk about it, not really. The words felt too heavy, too fragile to articulate the sheer horror of what had happened.
