The first sliver of dawn, a pale, bruised purple, bled into the oppressive blackness of the sky. It was a tentative light, as if the sun itself was afraid to fully commit, a stark contrast to the desperate energy coursing through Leo. His lungs burned, his legs ached with a primal need to flee, and the phantom chill of the woods clung to him like a shroud. Beside him, Ethan stumbled, his breath coming in ragged gasps, his eyes wide and unfocused. Caleb, his usual jovial mask shattered, ran with a grim determination, his face streaked with dirt and a fear that no joke could ever erase. Hubert, a silent, unyielding presence, kept pace, his gaze fixed forward.

"Almost there," Leo choked out, his voice raspy. "Just… just a little further."

The woods, which had seemed to stretch into an infinite, suffocating maze, were finally beginning to thin. The dense canopy gave way to sparser trees, allowing more of that hesitant dawn light to filter through. The air, though still heavy with the scent of damp earth and decaying leaves, felt marginally less charged, less… *watched*.
