Chapter 16
A Desperate Stand
Trapped, the remaining boys must pool their courage. Leo's resourcefulness, Sam's strength, Ethan's observation, and Caleb's surprising bravery are their only weapons against the supernatural.
The oppressive weight of the forest pressed in on them, a tangible thing that stole their breath and tightened their chests. Leo, Sam, Ethan, and Caleb huddled together, their backs against the rough bark of an ancient oak, the meager glow of Leo’s flashlight a trembling beacon against the encroaching black. They were trapped. The woods, once a playground of imagined adventures, had become a suffocating cage. The terrifying realization that Noah was truly gone, swallowed by the night, had settled over them like a shroud, heavy and cold.
“We have to… we have to do something,” Leo stammered, his voice barely a whisper. His mind raced, a frantic squirrel darting through a maze of paralyzing fear. His athletic build, usually a source of comfort, now seemed to hum with a desperate need to act, to *do* something, anything, to break this suffocating stillness. “We can’t just stay here, Leo. We have to find Noah. We have to… fight back.” The word felt alien on his tongue, a concept he’d only ever encountered in movies, not in the heart of a forest that seemed to pulse with a malevolent life of its own. He could feel the familiar prickle of unease, the echo of a childhood terror he’d buried deep, resurfacing with a vengeance.
