The air, thick with the scent of pine and damp earth, pressed in on Leo. It was the kind of silence that hummed, a low thrum beneath the chirping of crickets and the distant hoot of an owl. He huddled deeper into his sleeping bag, the rough canvas a small comfort against the encroaching chill and the prickle of unease that had settled over their campsite like a shroud. Beside him, Ethan’s breathing was shallow, punctuated by the occasional snuffle that spoke of a restless sleep. Caleb, usually a symphony of snores, was unnervingly quiet.

It had started subtly, as these things often do. A rustling in the undergrowth just beyond the flickering firelight, too deliberate for a deer, too heavy for a squirrel. Then came the feeling, a persistent, creeping sensation of being watched, as if unseen eyes tracked their every move from the impenetrable darkness of the trees. Leo, despite his bravest efforts to dismiss it as nerves, couldn't shake the unsettling familiarity of it all, a whisper of the old stories his grandfather used to tell, stories he’d always dismissed as folklore.

Sam, ever the pragmatist, had been the first to voice their shared apprehension. "It's just the woods, guys," he'd said, his voice a little too loud, a little too forced, as he’d poked the dying embers of their campfire. "Animals, wind in the trees. Nothing to worry about." But even Sam’s usual confidence had a frayed edge to it that night.
