Caleb's Fading Humor
Caleb’s jokes become frantic, a desperate attempt to ward off the encroaching dread. His forced laughter cracks, revealing the profound fear beneath his jovial facade.
The flickering firelight, once a beacon of cheerful camaraderie, now cast long, dancing shadows that seemed to writhe with a life of their own. Caleb, perched on a fallen log, cleared his throat, his usual boisterous laugh conspicuously absent, replaced by a strained, reedy sound. “So,” he began, his voice a little too loud, a little too high, “you guys hear about the old hermit who lived out here? Apparently, he used to talk to the squirrels, and they’d bring him acorns. One day, they stopped coming. And guess what? Neither did he!” He punctuated this with a forced chuckle that died out quickly, swallowed by the oppressive silence of the surrounding woods.
Leo watched him, a knot tightening in his stomach. Caleb’s jokes had always been the glue that held their group together, a shield against any awkwardness or unease. But tonight, the shield was cracking, revealing the raw fear beneath. Ethan, huddled closer to the fire, his eyes darting into the darkness, flinched at the sound. Hubert, as always, said nothing, his stoic presence a silent counterpoint to Caleb’s increasingly frantic attempts at levity.
“That’s… not really funny, Caleb,” Ethan whispered, his voice trembling.
