The air, once crisp with the promise of adventure, now hung thick and heavy, a suffocating blanket that pressed down on Leo’s chest. The chase had been a blur of adrenaline and terror, a desperate scramble through the gnarled embrace of the woods. Now, huddled together in a small, damp clearing that offered little in the way of sanctuary, the silence that followed the frantic pursuit was almost as unnerving as the sounds that had preceded it. Ethan, his face pale and streaked with dirt, was shivering uncontrollably, his gaze darting into the impenetrable darkness that ringed them. Caleb’s usual quick wit had evaporated, replaced by a tight, drawn expression, his knuckles white where he gripped a fallen branch like a meager weapon. Leo, despite the gnawing fear that clawed at his insides, tried to project a semblance of calm, his eyes scanning the trees, searching for any sign of movement, any hint of their pursuer.

But it was Hubert who drew Leo’s attention, his small frame rigid, his eyes wide and unblinking. He hadn't spoken a single word since they’d burst into this clearing, not a whimper, not a plea. It was as if the sheer terror had stolen his voice, leaving only a raw, primal fear etched onto his features. Leo knelt beside him, his voice a low murmur, trying to coax a response. "Hubert? Are you okay? Can you hear me?"

Hubert’s head slowly turned towards Leo, his eyes, usually bright with a childlike wonder, were now dark pools reflecting an unspeakable dread. He opened his mouth, a faint rasp escaping his lips, and then, in a voice barely above a whisper, he uttered, "Hubert."
