Chapter 8
The Ghostly Net
A massive fishing net drifts towards them. Kiko gets tangled, but Nalu cleverly uses sharp coral to cut him free, learning about dangers from the surface world.
The dappled sunlight, which had been Nalu's constant companion, began to fade as they swam deeper, the vast expanse of blue above them darkening with the afternoon. They had left the vibrant, if somewhat scarred, reef behind them, and the seascape had shifted once more. Now, swaying forests of kelp, their fronds like emerald ribbons in the gentle current, rose around them, creating an ethereal, underwater woodland. Tiny silver fish, like living sequins, darted through the waving stalks, their movements a silent ballet. A cluster of sea turtles, ancient and unhurried, rested on sandy patches, their shells like moss-covered stones. Nalu felt a pang of longing for the familiar comfort of his pod, for the easy chatter of his mother's whistles and the playful nudges of his friends. But the memory of the Heart of the Ocean, flickering and weak, spurred him onward.
Oru, his wise old eyes scanning their surroundings, let out a slow sigh that stirred the kelp around them. "The ocean," he murmured, his voice a gravelly rumble, "is changing." Nalu looked at him, a knot of unease tightening in his stomach. "How?" he asked, his voice barely a whisper. Oru nudged a strand of kelp with his nose. "The water is warmer than it should be, Nalu. And the currents… they are not as they once were. Something is wrong." Nalu felt a shiver, not of cold, but of a deep, primal fear. They had a long way to go, and the ocean, their home, felt increasingly fragile.
Suddenly, a sharp, panicked squeak sliced through the quiet. "Look out!" It was Kiko, his small body tensed, his eyes wide with alarm. Nalu spun around, his heart leaping into his throat. Drifting towards them, not with the gentle sway of the kelp, but with a menacing, purposeful glide, was a net. It was enormous, a vast, gaping maw of tangled threads, shimmering eerily in the dim light. It looked like a colossal spider web spun from the very depths of the ocean, designed to ensnare and suffocate.
