Chapter 4
A Republic's Stain
In a swift and brutal act, General Antonio Luna is assassinated by the Kawit troops. The shocking event leaves a scene of disbelief and unanswered questions, marking a dark turning point for the revolution.
The air in the cuartel, thick with the cloying scent of stale tobacco and the metallic tang of fear, seemed to hold its breath. It was a palpable thing, a heavy shroud that clung to the very stones of Cabanatuan, muffling the usual sounds of a garrison at work. Sergeant Mateo Reyes, his jaw set in a grim line, watched the unfolding scene with an unsettling stillness. His eyes, hard and unyielding, flickered from the stoic faces of his fellow Kawit men to the man at the center of the storm. General Antonio Luna.
Luna, his uniform still bearing the dust of his journey, stood amidst a knot of soldiers. His voice, usually a thunderclap that could rally an army or shatter dissent, was now a low growl, laced with a dangerous mix of disbelief and fury. Captain Eduardo Rusca, his loyal shadow, stood a few paces behind, his hand instinctively hovering near the hilt of his pistol. Rusca’s gaze darted nervously between Luna and the armed men surrounding them, a knot of dread tightening in his stomach. He had heard the whispers, seen the veiled glances, felt the undercurrent of animosity that always seemed to swirl around the Kawit regiment when Luna was near. This was no ordinary summons. This was a snare.
“What is the meaning of this?” Luna’s voice cut through the strained silence, sharp as a bayonet. He addressed no one in particular, yet his words seemed to hang in the air, accusatory and demanding. He had expected President Aguinaldo, perhaps a council of war, not this… this armed reception. The faces of the Kawit soldiers were impassive, their rifles held with a practiced ease that spoke of more than just drill. There was a grim purpose in their stance, a chilling readiness that sent a shiver down Rusca’s spine, a shiver he fought to suppress.
