Chapter 18
The Choice
A confrontation looms. Anya must choose between upholding the Doctrine and protecting Kaelen, or defying the courts and forging a new path for the magical world.
The air in the great hall was thick with unspoken tension, a palpable thing that clung to the tapestries and settled like dust on the polished obsidian floor. Anya stood before the assembled council, a lone figure against a backdrop of stern, unforgiving faces. To her left, Kaelen remained a statue of coiled power, his lupine eyes, now a startling, intelligent amber, fixed on the proceedings. He was no longer the hulking beast that had torn through her defenses, but the curse had etched its mark, a permanent shadow in the depths of his gaze. His hands, though human once more, were still large, the knuckles thick, the nails blunt and scarred. He had chosen to stand beside her, a silent testament to the bond that had solidified in the crucible of fear and recognition.
Commander Lyra Sol, her armor gleaming like a promise of unwavering adherence to law, stood at the head of the table, her expression a mask of controlled disapproval. He had arrived days ago, a serpent in their midst, ostensibly to "assess the situation" following the failed deployment of the Vance house's Cursed Beast. Anya knew, with a chilling certainty, that he was here to unravel her, to expose the rot beneath the carefully constructed edifice of the Cursed Beast Doctrine.
"Lady Anya Vance," Lyra's voice, clear and resonant, cut through the silence. "You stand accused of a grave violation of the Cursed Beast Doctrine. A sanctioned weapon, deployed by House Thorne, was… compromised. And you, by your own admission, interfered."
