The air in Anya’s study, usually thick with the scent of dried ink and ancient parchment, now carried a faint, metallic tang. It was the scent of fear, and something else, something primal and unsettling. Commander Lyra Sol stood just inside the doorway, her polished obsidian armor gleaming dully in the dim light, her hand resting on the hilt of a sword that seemed to hum with suppressed power. Her gaze swept over the room, lingering on the overturned chair, the scattered papers, and finally, on the figure seated by the hearth.

He was no longer the hulking, shadow-draped beast that had first shattered the night. The raw, untamed fury still simmered beneath the surface, a palpable heat that warped the very air around him, but it was tempered now. The sharp angles of his face were softened, the wildness in his eyes replaced by a deep, unsettling weariness. He watched the flames, his knuckles white where they gripped the arms of the chair, his breath coming in shallow, controlled bursts. Anya stood a few feet away, her posture radiating a quiet defiance that was, in its own way, as potent as any weapon.

“Lady Anya Vance,” Lyra’s voice was a low, resonant chime, each syllable precisely enunciated. It held the weight of authority, the unyielding certainty of someone who had spent a lifetime upholding the Cursed Beast Doctrine. “I am Commander Lyra Sol of the Sovereign Courts. I am here to investigate a breach of the Doctrine. A… deviation.”
