Detective Isabella Rossi stood in the sterile confines of Elias Vance’s office, the fluorescent lights buzzing overhead like trapped insects. The air, usually thick with the scent of stale coffee and desperation from the residents, was now tinged with Vance’s expensive, cloying cologne. Her gaze swept over the meticulously organized desk, the framed photos of smiling, oblivious tenants, the silent testament to his carefully curated facade. He sat behind it, a picture of professional concern, but Rossi saw the flicker of something else in his eyes – a practiced unease.

“Mr. Vance,” Rossi began, her voice low and steady, a counterpoint to the agitated drumming of her fingers against her thigh. “We’ve been over this. The disappearances, the fatalities… they’re not isolated incidents. They’re connected.” She slid a manila folder across the polished surface. It landed with a soft thud, a harbinger of the unpleasant truths it contained. “This is from Dr. Hayes’ research. The incident at the old Magnolia Creek Plantation. The one you conveniently forgot to mention when we first spoke.”

Vance picked up the folder, his movements deliberately slow, as if giving himself time to compose his response. He flipped through the brittle, yellowed pages, his jaw tightening with each turn. “Detective, I’ve told you. That was decades ago. A tragedy, certainly, but entirely unrelated to the… unfortunate events here at Murda Bay.” His voice was smooth, almost syrupy, but Rossi detected a new, sharp edge beneath the veneer.
