The fluorescent lights of the precinct hummed a low, insistent drone, a sound that usually faded into the background of Detective Isabella Rossi’s life. Tonight, however, it seemed to amplify the gnawing emptiness in her gut, a familiar companion to the lingering scent of stale coffee and desperation that clung to the air. She stared at the board, a chaotic tapestry of crime scene photos, witness statements, and tenuous connections. Building C. Always Building C. The name itself felt like a curse, a dark stain on the otherwise unremarkable landscape of Murda Bay.

Detective Miller, her partner, a man whose stoic demeanor often masked a sharp mind, cleared his throat from his desk. “Anything, Rossi?”

Isabella shook her head, her gaze fixed on a faded photograph of Mrs. Henderson, the latest victim. Her vacant eyes seemed to stare right through Isabella, a silent accusation. It was the way she was found, slumped against her kitchen counter, a single, precise puncture wound at the base of her skull. No forced entry. No struggle. Just… gone. It mirrored the other cases with chilling, almost artistic, precision.
