Detective Isabella Rossi found herself back at Murda Bay, the late afternoon sun casting long, distorted shadows that seemed to writhe like living things across the cracked asphalt of the parking lot. Building C loomed, a monolithic presence against the bruised twilight sky, its windows like vacant eyes staring out at the world. She’d been here countless times in the past week, each visit a fresh immersion in the suffocating atmosphere of fear and suspicion that clung to the place like a damp shroud. Thorne, a gaunt figure with eyes that darted like trapped birds, sat hunched in a worn armchair, a precarious stack of notebooks and a battered digital recorder on the small table beside him.

“You said you had something for me, Mr. Thorne,” Rossi began, her voice low, trying to project an air of calm she didn’t entirely feel. The silence in the apartment was profound, broken only by the distant hum of traffic from the city beyond.
