The air in Dr. Eleanor Hayes’s archive was thick with the scent of decaying paper and forgotten lives. Dust motes danced in the slivers of sunlight that pierced the gloom, illuminating stacks of brittle documents and leather-bound ledgers. Detective Rossi navigated the narrow aisles, her footsteps soft on the worn linoleum, a stark contrast to the usual clamor of the precinct. She felt a familiar prickle of unease, a phantom echo of the suffocating silence that had followed the discovery of Mr. Abernathy’s body.
Dr. Hayes, a woman whose composure seemed as immutable as the historical records she curated, gestured to a small, cluttered desk. “I believe I have found something pertinent, Detective. It required a deep dive, beyond the usual public records.” Her voice, usually measured, held a tremor of something akin to excitement, or perhaps apprehension.
Rossi settled onto a creaking chair, her gaze fixed on the small stack of manila folders Dr. Hayes had placed before her. The labels were faded, the ink bleeding into the paper. “What did you find?”
