Another death rocks Building C. Rossi finds a cryptic symbol left at the scene, matching one Thorne had documented. The pressure mounts as Vance attempts to control the narrative and obstruct the investigation.
The siren’s wail, a familiar lament in the humid Houston night, sliced through the stale air of Building C. It was the third time in as many weeks that the sound had punctuated the uneasy quiet of Murda Bay. Detective Isabella Rossi gripped the steering wheel, her knuckles white, as she navigated the labyrinthine streets. The rain, a sudden, furious downpour, slicked the asphalt, mirroring the unsettling slickness of the case.
This time, it was Mr. Henderson, the retired accountant who lived on the third floor, directly above the vacant apartment where Mrs. Gable had met her end. The initial report was vague, as they always were in Building C: ‘unresponsive.’ Rossi knew better. Unresponsive in Building C rarely meant a peaceful passing in one’s sleep.
She pulled up to the scene, her partner, Detective Miller, already out of his car, a dark silhouette against the flashing blue and red lights. The uniformed officers had cordoned off the narrow entrance to Building C, their faces grim beneath their rain-soaked caps. The air thrummed with a palpable tension, a mixture of fear and morbid curiosity emanating from the few residents who dared to peer from behind their drawn blinds.
