Chapter 8
Islands of the Lost
Following a fragmented map, the "Sea Serpent" navigates a perilous archipelago rumored to be a graveyard of ships and souls, guarded by ancient sea magic.
The salt spray tasted like a promise and a threat, a familiar tang that clung to my tongue as the *Sea Serpent* cut through the inky blackness. Above, the moon, a bone-white skull, leered down at us, its light painting the waves in shades of tarnished silver. Islands, jagged teeth in the ocean’s maw, began to emerge from the mist, a graveyard of shattered hulls and forgotten dreams. This was the archipelago, the place where ships went to die, where the very air thrummed with the restless souls of the drowned. Peg Leg Pete, his one good eye squinting at the parchment in his calloused hand, traced a line with a trembling finger. “Here, Captain,” he rasped, his voice rough as barnacles. “The ‘Islands of the Lost.’ The map says the next clue is hidden amongst these cursed rocks.”
I grunted, my gaze sweeping across the skeletal remains of masts and rigging that jutted from the churning water like grasping fingers. Each wreck was a tombstone, a silent testament to the sea’s insatiable hunger. “Cursed, you say? They all are, Pete. But none have ever stopped me.” Yet, even as the words left my lips, a tremor ran through the deck, a low groan from the *Sea Serpent* herself, as if she felt the weight of the dead surrounding us. The spectral crew, usually a silent, efficient force, seemed to huddle closer to the masts, their translucent forms flickering like dying embers. Lyra, ever the enigma, stood at the bow, her eyes, vast pools of shadowed sea, fixed on the approaching islands. I couldn't read her, not truly, but I felt her unease, a cold current beneath the surface of my own grim determination.
“The currents are treacherous here, Captain,” Pete warned, his brow furrowed. “And the whispers… I’ve heard tales of the sirens that guard these waters, luring ships to their doom with promises of solace.”
