The salt spray, usually a bracing kiss on my face, felt like a shroud of ice tonight. The full moon, a bloated pearl against the velvet of the sky, cast a sickly, silver light that did little to warm the chill seeping into my bones. It was a moon that promised secrets, and the sea, in its own cruel way, seemed to hum with anticipation. We were close. I could feel it, a thrumming beneath the deck, a vibration that echoed the beat of my own restless heart. The Obsidian Tide. The very name sent a shiver, not of fear, but of fierce, burning desire, through me.

“Captain,” Peg Leg Pete’s voice, a gravelly rumble, cut through the quiet. He stood at the helm, his one good eye fixed on the horizon, the other a milky, sightless orb that had seen too much. “The currents are…unusual. They pull us with a force I ain’t felt before. Not natural, Captain.”

I grunted, my gaze sweeping across the deck of the Sea Serpent. My crew, a collection of lost souls and restless spirits, moved with a silent efficiency that always unnerved outsiders. They were my shadows, my loyal pack, bound to me by something more than just plunder. They were bound by the sea’s own melancholic embrace, and by the ambition that I, Rasmus Creach, had ignited within them. Tonight, that ambition felt like a fire raging in my gut.
