The salt spray was a familiar caress against my weathered face, a cool balm on the fever that had begun to simmer beneath my skin. The full moon, a stark, unblinking eye in the velvet sky, cast an ethereal glow upon the ‘Sea Serpent’s’ decks, turning the familiar timbers into something spectral, something alien. We were moving under her cold gaze, a shadow of a ship on a sea of shadows, chasing a legend. The Obsidian Tide. The very name tasted like brine and blood on my tongue.

“Captain,” Peg Leg Pete’s gruff voice rumbled beside me, his one good eye fixed on the churning water ahead. “The currents be playin’ tricks again. Nothin’ natural about it.”

I grunted, my gaze sweeping across the deck. My crew, a collection of souls as lost and broken as myself, moved with a practiced silence. They were more than just men and women; they were echoes, specters bound to my will, to this ship, to this quest. Lyra, however, was a different kind of silent. She stood near the helm, a wraith in her own right, her eyes, the color of a stormy sea, fixed on the horizon. She rarely spoke, but when she did, it was as if the ocean itself decided to murmur secrets into our ears.
