The salt spray stung my eyes, a familiar, welcome sting that usually sharpened my senses, honed my edge. But tonight, under the bloated, sickly glow of the full moon, it felt like a shroud. The *Sea Serpent* cut through the obsidian water, her tattered sails, emblazoned with our grim sigil, catching the meager light like dying embers. My crew, a collection of souls bound to me by more than just shared plunder, moved with an unsettling grace, their spectral forms flickering at the edges, a constant reminder of the pacts made and the prices paid.

"Anything on the horizon, Pete?" I rasped, my voice a low growl that barely disturbed the unnatural quiet.

Peg Leg Pete, my first mate, his peg leg thudding softly on the deck, squinted through his spyglass. Even his weathered face, usually etched with a pragmatism that anchored me, seemed drawn and pale. "Nothing but the moon's reflection, Captain. And a whole lot of empty sea." He lowered the glass, his gaze lingering on the shimmering surface. "Feels… heavy, though. Like the air itself is holding its breath."
