Beneath a Fading Moon
The "Sea Serpent" sails towards an unknown horizon, forever bound by the legend of the Obsidian Tide. The grim visage on their sails now reflects a harder-won wisdom.
The salt spray, once a bracing kiss, now felt like a mournful caress against my weathered skin. The *Sea Serpent*, our dark heart beating beneath a sky that bled from bruised twilight into the first hesitant blush of dawn, cut through the waves. The grim visage on our sails, a symbol that had once promised terror and untold riches, now seemed to mock us with its perpetual grin. We had seen the face of the Obsidian Tide, felt its crushing weight, and survived. But survival, I was learning, was a far more complex beast than any storm or cannonball.
Peg Leg Pete, his one good eye fixed on the horizon, stood beside me at the helm. The usual gruffness in his voice was softened, replaced by a weary resignation that mirrored the ache in my own bones. “The moon’s fading, Captain,” he observed, his gaze lingering on the sliver of silver disappearing into the encroaching light. “And so’s the magic, I reckon.”
Magic. That was the word we’d tossed around like doubloons in a tavern, a shimmering promise that had led us to the precipice of ruin. The Obsidian Tide. It wasn’t a treasure to be locked away in a chest; it was a force, a primal energy that had whispered temptations into my ear, promising dominion over the very elements. It had nearly claimed me, had nearly dragged my crew and myself into an abyss from which there would be no return.
