The salt spray tasted different now. Sharper, somehow. Less like the sting of the ocean’s kiss and more like the bite of a forgotten wound. The Sea Serpent, bless her darkened timbers, still cut through the waves, but the swagger was gone. Replaced by a weary, grim determination that settled on us like the perpetual fog that clung to the northern isles. We were alive. Most of us, anyway. And that, in itself, felt like a miracle, a cruel jest from the sea spirits we’d so foolishly defied.
The Obsidian Tide. The words themselves now felt like a curse, a phantom ache in my bones. It was no longer a glittering prize, a key to unlocking untold power. It was a gaping maw, a vortex of madness that had nearly swallowed us whole. The echoes of its whispers, the insidious promises of dominion, still slithered at the edges of my mind, a constant, gnawing temptation. I’d seen the look in the eyes of the men who had succumbed, the vacant stares that promised a swift descent into oblivion. And I’d seen the price paid by those who tried to wield it.
“Captain,” Peg Leg Pete’s voice, usually a steady rumble, was raspy, like sand caught in a gale. He stood by the helm, his one good eye fixed on the bruised horizon. His knuckles were white where he gripped the worn wood. “The current’s picking up again. Nasty, it looks.”
