The salt spray, usually a bracing kiss that cleared the fog from my mind, felt thick and cloying tonight, clinging to my skin like a shroud. The full moon, a chipped pearl against the bruised velvet of the night sky, cast an eerie, spectral glow upon the deck of the Sea Serpent. It was a light that seemed to seep into the very timbers of the ship, to animate the spectral forms of my crew, their translucent bodies shimmering with a faint, phosphorescent light. They moved with a practiced silence, ghosts of sailors long drowned, bound to my will by a pact I barely understood myself.
“Captain,” Peg Leg Pete’s voice, gruff but steady, cut through the oppressive stillness. He stood beside me at the helm, his one good eye fixed on the horizon, the other, a clouded orb, seeming to stare into some other, darker plane. “The currents are shifting. Unnatural like. The old charts don't show this.”
I grunted, my hand tightening on the wheel. The Sea Serpent responded, her dark hull cutting through the unnaturally calm waters. Unnatural was the word of the night. The air itself hummed with a latent power, a thrumming that resonated deep within my bones, a low frequency that promised both apotheosis and oblivion.
