Peg Leg Pete, bless his pragmatic heart, hunched over his charts, his one good eye gleaming in the lantern light, while Lyra, forever a shadow at the edge of my vision, stared out at the horizon, her gaze lost in something far beyond the reach of mortal eyes.
We were close. I could feel it, a tremor in the air, a hum in the very bones of the ship.
