The salt spray, a familiar kiss on my weathered face, tasted sharper tonight, laced with an unnatural chill that had nothing to do with the sea’s temper. The moon, a bloated pearl in the ink-black sky, cast a sickly luminescence over the deck of the *Sea Serpent*, turning the spectral sheen of my crew’s forms into an even more unsettling spectacle. They were a motley collection of the lost and the damned, bound to my will by a pact forged in the deepest of hells, their whispers a constant, low hum beneath the creak of the timbers and the sigh of the wind.

“Anything, Pete?” I growled, my voice rough from disuse and the lingering phantom of a cough that never quite left my lungs.

Peg Leg Pete, my first mate and the only soul aboard who still possessed the solid weight of bone and sinew, squinted at the star-dusted horizon. His one good eye, sharp as a mariner’s needle, traced phantom lines on the parchment spread before him. “The currents are playing tricks, Captain. Like they’re being… nudged. But the charts are clear enough, if you squint hard enough at the smudge where the ink bled.” He tapped a gnarled finger on a faded X. “We’re close. Terribly close.”
